This week I attended a tasting of the latest release of brunello in New York City. As a sommelier I attend many of these. The Brunellos usually never fail to excite and this year is no exception.
The Valdacava was one of the top producers this year from my perspective in terms of quality and consistency across their line. I was impressed. And out of a class of about 50 producers, that says a lot.
The 2004 Rosso was one of the outstanding Rosso in its field. Beautiful ruby color was complimented by a fresh robust fruit and chocolate nose. This is a wine that is perfect with that lovely Italian meal, and complements a red sauce, herbs and garlic. It had a long smooth finish. A case is in order for this wine.
The 2001 Brunello was also one of the best this year. Deep in color, it had an intense and rich nose. Subtle in fruit and rich in oak and cedar notes it was beautifully balanced. You just want to keep your nose in the glass. Past the lips, it had a rich mothfeel, something rare in brunellos. Sometimes I find Brunelllo a bit thin but this was extraordiary in richness with almost a thick bordeaux like texture. A long silky finish compliented this wine.
And the Riserva, what can I say. They saved the best for last. Even better than the brunello, it had all the richness, the balance and complexity with an even longer finish. A great wine.
Overall, I was very please with the Valdicava this year. You cannot go wrong. Just pick a price point, pick and occaission and you will not be disappointed.
